How it works
Your UK Passport Photo In 3 Steps
Take it as a selfie, the software measures it, and every rule is checked before you pay.
Take It As A Selfie
Hold your phone at arm's length and the camera guide sets the distance, tilt and light, so the photo reads like one taken by someone else. Prefer a helper? Hand them the phone. Or upload a photo taken in the last month.
We Check Every Rule
The software sizes the file, keeps your head, shoulders and upper body in the frame and checks each GOV.UK rule. Your face is never edited.
Get Your Photo File
We email you the file within minutes, once the final automated check passes, with a printable 4x6 inch (10 x 15 cm) sheet. You upload it yourself to your application on GOV.UK. Email only, nothing is posted.

- At least 600 x 750 px, 50 KB to 10 MB
- Head, shoulders and upper body
- Plain light coloured background
- Even light, no shadows
- Eyes open, mouth closed, no glasses
- Ready to upload on GOV.UK
Three Tips Before You Take The Photo
Get these three right and the software handles the rest.
Selfie at arm's length
Take It As A Selfie
Hold the phone at arm's length, at eye level. The guide sets the distance and framing for you.
Look at the lens
Face The Camera
Look straight at the lens with your head level, eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
Plain light wall
Use A Plain Light Wall
Stand a step away from a plain light coloured wall, facing a window. We keep your own wall when it passes.
Why Customers Choose PassportPhotos
Quick, guided, and backed by our Acceptance guarantee.
-
Three Minutes, No Photo Booth
Take it as a selfie at home, see it pass the first check, then pay once. No account, no booth, no queue.
-
Guided, Then Checked
The camera helps line up the shot. Then the software checks size, background and pose against the GOV.UK rules, before you pay.
-
Accepted Or Double Your Money Back
Add the Acceptance guarantee at checkout. If the passport office rejects the photo, you get double your money back.
Accepted Or Double Your Money Back
Every photo gets two automated checks: one while you take it, before you pay, and a final check of the finished photo before we release it. Add the Acceptance guarantee at checkout for $6.99 and that final check is stricter. If the passport office rejects the photo, email us within 14 days of the rejection and you get twice what you paid.
UK Passport Photo Requirements, In Plain Words
GOV.UK has its own rules for digital passport photos, separate from the printed photo rules. Each one is explained below.

Size And File
At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. The file must be at least 50 KB and no more than 10 MB.

Background
Plain and light coloured, with clear contrast between you and the wall. No shadows, patterns, objects or other people.

Head, Shoulders And Upper Body
Show your head, shoulders and upper body. Do not crop it yourself: GOV.UK crops the photo for you.

Glasses
Take them off unless you have to wear them. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are never allowed. Our tool asks everyone to take glasses off.

Selfie Or A Helper
GOV.UK says you need someone to help you take the photo. Our selfie guide sets the distance and framing so the photo reads like one taken by someone else. Or ask a friend to hold the phone.

No Edits To Your Face
GOV.UK wants a photo unaltered by computer software. We never retouch your face. We keep your own wall when it already passes and replace it only when it would fail.
Before you pay, the software checks size, background, framing, expression, glasses and lighting. It cannot tell when a photo was taken, and GOV.UK wants one from the last month, so take a new one.
When You Need This Photo
The digital photo for the online application, delivered by email.

Online Passport Applications
The digital photo for a UK passport application made online on GOV.UK.

Email Delivery Only
A digital file sent by email within minutes, plus a printable 4x6 inch (10 x 15 cm) sheet. Nothing is posted and there is no shop pickup.

Applying On A Paper Form?
Paper forms have separate printed photo rules. This photo is made for the online application.

Other Passports
Irish and New Zealand passports use different photos. See the Irish passport photo and the New Zealand passport photo.

We Make The Photo Only
You fill in and send your own application on GOV.UK. We do not apply for you or contact the passport office.

Taken In The Last Month
GOV.UK asks for a photo taken in the last month. An older photo can be refused, so take a fresh one.

Why UK Passport Photos Get Rejected, And How We Catch It
The usual reasons:
- a file under 600 x 750 pixels, or outside 50 KB to 10 MB
- glasses, glare or tinted lenses
- a busy, dark or patterned background
- shadows on your face or behind you
- a photo cropped too tight
The software checks for each of these before you pay.
What We Do Not Do To Your Photo
We size the file and keep your head, shoulders and upper body in the frame. We do not change your face, your features, your eyes or your expression. GOV.UK wants a photo unaltered by computer software, so we keep your own plain wall whenever it passes and replace the background only when your wall would fail. The safest route is a plain light wall behind you.
