Irish Passport Photo Requirements, In Plain Words

Passport Online has its own rules on file size, framing and background. Each one is explained below.

  • Size And File

    A colour JPEG at least 715 pixels wide and 951 pixels high, no larger than 9 MB. No scans and no blurry or compressed files.

  • Background

    Completely plain light grey, white or cream, with enough contrast between you and the wall. No shadows or patterns.

  • Head To Mid Torso

    Frame yourself from the top of your head to the middle of your torso, with visible space around your head and shoulders.

  • Glasses

    Transparent glasses are allowed if there is no glare or shadow and the frames do not cover your eyes. Dark glasses are not allowed.

  • Selfie Or A Helper

    The guidelines on ireland.ie say you cannot take a selfie. Our selfie guide sets the distance and framing so the photo reads like one taken by someone else. Or ask a friend to hold the phone.

  • No Edits To Your Face

    The photo must not be digitally altered. We never retouch your face. We keep your own wall when it already passes and replace it only when it would fail.

Before you pay, the software checks size, background, framing, expression, glasses and lighting. It cannot tell when a photo was taken, and it must be from the last six months, so take a new one.
