How it works

Your Pakistan Passport Photo in 3 Steps

Take it as a selfie, the software measures it, and every rule is checked before you pay.

  1. Take It As A Selfie

Hold your phone at arm's length and the camera guide sets the distance, tilt and light. Prefer a helper? Hand them the phone. Or upload a photo taken in the last 6 months.

  2. We Check Every Rule

The software sizes the file to the 35 x 45 shape and checks the white background, glasses and pose against each DGIP rule. Your face is never edited.

  3. Get Your Photo File

We email you the JPEG within minutes, once the final automated check passes. You upload it yourself on the DGIP portal when you renew. Email only, nothing is posted.

Three Tips Before You Take the Photo

Get these three right and the software handles the rest.

  • A woman holding a phone at arm's length, with the distance to her face marked Selfie at arm's length

    Take It As A Selfie

Hold the phone at arm's length, at eye level. The guide sets the distance and framing for you.

  • Two photos of a man side by side, one facing the camera squarely and one turned away Look at the lens

    Face The Camera

Look straight at the lens with your head level, eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression. Glasses off.

  • Two photos of a woman in a light scarf, one lit evenly against a plain light wall and one with a hard shadow across her face Plain white wall

    Use A Plain White Wall

Stand a step away from a plain white wall, facing a window, so your face is evenly lit with no shadows.

Pakistan Passport Photo Requirements, in Plain Words

DGIP publishes the rules for the photo you upload when you renew online. Each one is explained below.

  • Size And File

DGIP gives the size as 350/467 pixels in JPEG. Its portal shows a 35 x 45 mm photo, and the file limits on DGIP pages run from 350 KB to 5 MB.

Your file is a JPEG under 350 KB in the 35 x 45 shape, larger than 350 x 467 pixels, so it fits all of them.

  • White Background

Plain white, with no shadows, patterns, objects or other people in the photo.

  • Head And Shoulders

A close up of your full head and the top of your shoulders, facing the camera, with both edges of your face showing. From chin to crown, your head is 29 to 34 mm of the 45 mm height.

  • No Glasses

The DGIP photo guide says your eyes must show clearly, with no glasses on. Clear lenses come off too, and the camera check asks for it.

  • Selfie Or A Helper

Take it yourself with the camera guide. It sets the distance, height and framing, so your selfie looks the way a photo taken by someone else would. A friend can hold the phone if you prefer.

  • Head Covering

A head covering worn for religious reasons is fine if your face shows from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead, with both edges of your face clear.

Before you pay, the software checks size, background, framing, expression, glasses and lighting. It cannot tell when a photo was taken, and DGIP wants one from the last 6 months, so take a new one.

Why Pakistan Passport Photos Get Rejected, and How We Catch It

Each of these breaks a DGIP rule:

  • glasses, or glare on your eyes
  • a background that is not plain white
  • shadows on your face or behind you
  • a head that is too small or cut off in the frame
  • a file over the 350 KB limit of the portal's photo checker

The software checks for each of these before you pay.

What We Do Not Do to Your Photo

We size the file and keep your full head and the top of your shoulders in the 35 x 45 frame. We do not change your face, your features, your eyes or your expression. When the wall behind you is not plain white, we change only the background, to plain white. A plain white wall behind you gives the cleanest result.

FAQ

Pakistan Passport Photo Questions, Answered

  • What size is a Pakistan passport photo?
A Pakistan passport photo for online renewal is a JPEG on a plain white background. DGIP gives the size as 350/467 pixels, and its portal shows a 35 x 45 mm photo with the head 29 to 34 mm tall. We send a file in the 35 x 45 shape, larger than 350 x 467 pixels and under 350 KB.
  • How do I upload a photo for my Pakistani passport renewal online?
You upload your Pakistan passport photo, a white background JPEG under 350 KB, on the DGIP e-Services portal, onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk, as one step of the online renewal. We make the photo only and email you the file. You fill in and pay for the renewal yourself.
  • Can I take my Pakistani passport photo with my phone?
Yes, you can take your Pakistani passport photo as a selfie on your phone with our camera guide. It sets the distance, height and framing for the 35 x 45 shape, and the software checks every rule before you pay. A friend can hold the phone if you prefer.
  • Can I wear glasses in my Pakistan passport photo?
No. A Pakistan passport photo is taken with no glasses on, according to the DGIP photo guide, and that includes clear lenses. Our camera check asks you to take them off before it makes your 35 x 45 photo.
  • Can I wear a hijab or headscarf in my Pakistan passport photo?
Yes, a head covering worn for religious reasons is fine in a Pakistan passport photo, as long as your face shows from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead, with both edges clear. The software checks your face is fully visible in the 35 x 45 frame before you pay.

Not always. The NADRA Pak ID app uses the photo from its face check unless you tap Upload and add a photo that meets the passport photo standards. If you would rather choose the photo that goes on your passport, our 35 x 45 white background photo is made to that standard.
  • What if my photo is rejected?
