How it works

Your renewal photo in 3 steps

Take it, let the software check it, upload it to your renewal.

  1. Take or upload a photo

The camera guides you on distance, tilt and light while you line it up. Or upload a recent photo you already have.

  2. We crop it and check it

The AI crops it square, sizes your head, sets a plain white background and checks every requirement.

  3. Upload it to your renewal

The file is in your inbox within a minute of paying. Upload it at opr.travel.state.gov, the official renewal site.

Three tips before you take the photo

Get these three right and the software handles the rest.

  • A man holding a phone at arm's length with the distance marked

    Distance From The Camera

Take the photo 16 to 20 inches, or 40 to 50 cm, from your face.

  • Two photos side by side, one facing the camera squarely and one turned away

    Face The Camera

Hold the camera at face height. Keep your head straight and your expression neutral.

  • Two photos side by side, one lit evenly by a window and one in shadow

    Ensure Even Lighting

Stand facing a light source, such as an exposed window. Don't worry about the background.

Eligibility

Can you renew online?

The State Department's online renewal has its own rules. You can renew online only if all of these are true.

  • A 10-Year Passport

The passport you are renewing was valid for 10 years, and it expires within a year or expired less than 5 years ago.

  • Age 25 Or Older

You are 25 or older when you apply.

  • No Name Or Sex Change

You are not changing personal information such as your name or sex.

  • Not Travelling For 6 Weeks

Online renewals cannot be expedited, so you are not travelling for at least 6 weeks.

  • In The United States

You are in a US state or territory when you submit the application.

  • Passport In Hand

You have your passport, it is not damaged, and you have not reported it lost or stolen.

Not eligible? Renew by mail or in person with a printed photo. Every order includes a 4 x 6 sheet with two 2 x 2 photos, or choose prints mailed to you.

The file

The file requirements, in plain words

The upload checks the file before you can submit. Ours is made to pass it.

  • Format

JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF. Ours is a JPEG.

  • File Size

Between 54 KB and 10 MB. Ours sits inside that range every time.

  • Original

A photo taken with a camera or phone, not a photo of a printed photo and not a scan.

  • Content

The same rules as a printed passport photo: head 1 to 1 3/8 inches in the 2 x 2 frame, plain white or off white background, color, taken in the last 6 months, glasses off.

  • Ready To Upload

The upload lets you reposition or crop the photo. Ours arrives already cropped, so there is nothing to adjust.

  • Prints Too

Every order includes the 4 x 6 sheet with two 2 x 2 photos, in case you end up renewing by mail.

Renew only at opr.travel.state.gov, the official site. We make the photo; we do not submit your application.

Why photos get rejected, and how we catch it

The State Department publishes its own examples of rejected photos:

  • head too small or too large
  • shadows across the face
  • a colored or patterned background
  • glasses, eyes closed, mouth open or head tilted
  • a filter, or a photo older than six months

Our software measures the head size, the tilt, the light and the background against the State Department's own requirements, and shows you every result before you pay. A photo that fails a check cannot be bought; you retake it, free, until it passes. That matters, because a rejection costs you weeks.

What we do not do to your photo

We crop it, size it, place your head correctly and put it on plain white. We do not change your face, your features, your eyes or your expression. The State Department rejects altered photos, and a photo that looks like you is the whole point.

If you add photo retouching, we remove temporary blemishes, shadows under the eyes, stray hairs and dust spots, and nothing else.
