How it works

Your UK Passport Photo In 3 Steps

Someone takes the photo, the software measures it, and every rule is checked before you pay.

  1. Ask Someone To Take It

GOV.UK says someone has to help you take the photo, so no selfies. Hand them your phone and the back camera guides them on distance, tilt and light. Or upload a photo taken in the last month.

  2. We Check Every Rule

The software sizes the file, keeps your head, shoulders and upper body in the frame and checks each GOV.UK rule. Your face is never edited.

  3. Get Your Photo File

We email you the file within minutes, once the final automated check passes, with a printable 4x6 inch (10 x 15 cm) sheet. You upload it yourself to your application on GOV.UK. Email only, nothing is posted.

Three Tips Before You Take The Photo

Get these three right and the software handles the rest.

  • A woman holding a phone at arm's length, with the distance to her face marked Someone else takes it

    Ask Someone To Take It

GOV.UK says someone must help you. Hand them your phone and ask them to hold it at your eye level.

  • Two photos of a woman side by side, one facing the camera squarely and one turned away Look at the lens

    Face The Camera

Look straight at the lens with your head level, eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.

    Use A Plain Light Wall

Stand a step away from a plain light coloured wall, facing a window. We keep your own wall when it passes.

UK Passport Photo Requirements, In Plain Words

GOV.UK has its own rules for digital passport photos, separate from the printed photo rules. Each one is explained below.

  • Size And File

At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. The file must be at least 50 KB and no more than 10 MB.

  • Background

Plain and light coloured, with clear contrast between you and the wall. No shadows, patterns, objects or other people.

  • Head, Shoulders And Upper Body

Show your head, shoulders and upper body. Do not crop it yourself: GOV.UK crops the photo for you.

  • Glasses

Take them off unless you have to wear them. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are never allowed. Our tool asks everyone to take glasses off.

  • Someone Else Takes It

GOV.UK says you need someone to help you take the photo. Our camera opens on the back lens so they can.

  • No Edits To Your Face

GOV.UK wants a photo unaltered by computer software. We never retouch your face. We keep your own wall when it already passes and replace it only when it would fail.

Before you pay, the software checks size, background, framing, expression, glasses and lighting. It cannot tell when a photo was taken, and GOV.UK wants one from the last month, so take a new one.

Why UK Passport Photos Get Rejected, And How We Catch It

The usual reasons:

  • a file under 600 x 750 pixels, or outside 50 KB to 10 MB
  • glasses, glare or tinted lenses
  • a busy, dark or patterned background
  • shadows on your face or behind you
  • a photo cropped too tight

The software checks for each of these before you pay.

What We Do Not Do To Your Photo

We size the file and keep your head, shoulders and upper body in the frame. We do not change your face, your features, your eyes or your expression. GOV.UK wants a photo unaltered by computer software, so we keep your own plain wall whenever it passes and replace the background only when your wall would fail. The safest route is a plain light wall behind you.
